BRADFORD, PA – February 27, 2018 – A garden tour will be returning to the Bradford area this summer. The Bradford Garden Tour seeks to revive the garden tour that was once hosted as part of the Betty Jane Monjar Garden Symposium. “There has been wide public interest in reviving such an event” says committee chair, Sheryl Silvis. “We are excited to bring such a well-loved event back to Bradford.”
The event, hosted by the Downtown Bradford Business District Authority and sponsored by Northwest, is slated for Sunday July 29th from 1-5pm. Ticket holders will register at Graham’s Greenhouse on East Main Street, where they will receive their tour guide map. From there, they will visit each of the gardens that were hand-picked as the finest in the Bradford Area. Refreshments will be provided at each garden stop, and participants will have the opportunity to explore the gardens, vote for their favorite, and enter for various prizes.
In addition to the renewed Garden Tour, the committee will also be hosting a brand new Garden Gala. The Gala will be held following the Garden Tour from 7:00pm-9:00pm at Graham’s Greenhouse and Landscaping on East Main Street. Wine, and other refreshments will be provided for this outdoor soiree. All finalists from the Garden Tour will receive free admission to the Gala, where the awards ceremony will take place.
“This will be a wonderful Summer event” says committee member Kim Graham. “Garden enthusiasts and novices alike will enjoy touring the best gardens Bradford has to offer, or relaxing and interacting during the Gala. Tour participants will have plenty of chances to win prizes and learn more about gardening, and our Gala guests will also be able to win prizes while enjoying a refined summer evening” Tickets will be available this Spring for both the Garden tour and the Garden Gala. Admission to either the Garden Tour or the Garden Gala is $10 for each event, while Combination Tour and Gala tickets will be $15. Proceeds will benefit the improvement of green spaces and landscaping public spaces in the Bradford Area.
The committee is currently accepting applications from garden owners interested in being considered for the tour. All those who wish to have their gardens considered should fill out an application and return it to the committee by Monday May 14th. Applications may be picked up at Graham’s Greenhouse and Landscaping on East Main Street, Northwest Bank on Main Street, Bella Capelli Salon on East Main Street and Proper’s Florist on West Washington Street. Applications can also be found on the Bradford Garden Tour’s Facebook page.
Each registered garden will be judged at a pre-arranged date in June. The top gardens will be selected as finalists and will be featured in the Garden Tour. Finalists will have refreshments and 1-2 volunteers provided at their garden for the Tour. Finalists are not required, but are encouraged, to be present for the duration of the tour. Finalists will also receive free admission to the Garden gala. One “Best in Show”, and one “People’s Choice” award will be presented to the top gardens during the Garden Gala and all finalists will receive certificates and recognition at the Gala.
Gardens of all kinds are accepted for consideration, including; traditional vegetable and flower gardens, large and small landscapes, container and patio gardens, and hardscapes. The committee encourages all gardeners to apply, regardless of size or style of the garden. “Some of the best gardens I’ve seen are the small ones” says local Master Gardener and committee member Bob Harris. “Don’t think you have to have a massive vegetable garden to become a finalist. There are many types and styles of gardens, each impressive in their own way.”
“We expect to receive a good number of applications” says Main Street Manager and committee member Chelsea Schwab. “There are many talented local gardeners that deserve to have their hard work shown off and this event is the perfect opportunity to do so. There is no cost to apply, and everything is provided by our committee for the tour. All our gardeners need to do is what they do best, and we take care of the rest.”
