BRADFORD, PA – June 2, 2018 – The Allegheny National Forest’s boat-to campgrounds: Hooks Brook, Handsome Lake, Hopewell, Pine Grove and Morrison, will no longer provide potable water services to campers. Failed water pumps, increasingly unreliable well water conditions and continuing reductions in congressionally allocated recreational funding have not provided the Allegheny National Forest resources to pursue repairs or alternative solutions for continued potable water services at these campgrounds. The Allegheny National Forest encourages any boaters or hikers using these specific campgrounds to either pack in potable water or utilize portable water filtration devices to screen local waters for drinking.
Also, the Allegheny National Forest in conjunction with its campground concessionaire, Allegheny Site Management, is temporarily closing the Loleta Recreation Area swim beach until drainage and dredging services can be performed after June 15th, 2018. The swim area will only be drained such that minor dredging can be performed in the wading area to collect and remove annual leaf litter and sedimentation that prevents safe swimming by users. The Allegheny National Forest will notify the public once the beach is reopen for use.
The Allegheny National Forest regrets any inconvenience caused by these actions.
The Allegheny National Forest is responsible for the maintenance of 20 developed campgrounds with 622 campsites that are under a 5-year concessionaire special use permit with Allegheny Site Management who is responsible the daily operation and management of these sites.
