“Wow! That is a monster elk!” Visitors to the Keystone Elk Country Visitor Center can hear comments like this from elk enthusiasts all along the trails—but is it a monster elk? By applying a scientific technique originally used to estimate the size of dinosaurs, it’s surprisingly easy to estimate the weight and mass of an elk based on the tracks it leaves behind. Guests are invited to join as experts demonstrate how to separate the “monsters” from the lightweights and explain how scientists use similar methods to gauge the weight of other hard-to-measure animals and even dinosaurs.
