Consider starting your "New Year" off with a healthy walk along the General Kane Hiking Trail. The "First Day Hike" is an approximately 1.5 mile, easy to moderate, walk in the woods. During the hike, look for signs of wildlife in the area. This trail is in the "open to hunting" area, so participants are asked to wear orange hats and vests. Wear appropriate footwear and dress for the weather. Meet at the Trailhead in the overflow parking area. Coffee and hot chocolate will be provided after the walk in the Visitor Center Classroom. If so, then join staff of the Pfeiffer Nature Center on their 5th Annual Winter's Day Hike. The hike will be moderately strenuous - which, in terms of exercise means you will be able to talk but not sing during the activity. The hike is free to the public and will take place rain or shine. Described as visual metaphors, almost abstract, slightly surreal, these paintings explore the connection between brokenness and beauty. Brokenness allows, or forces, us to see and feel the benefits of our wild landscapes, our respite in the midst of chaos. These paintings highlight the natural beauty of the northern Alleghenies along with the worn facades of our built townscapes. In addition to studio work, Ryding is an adjunct professor at Pitt-Bradford and directs the local artists’ cooperative ArtWorks on the Summit in Kane, PA.
