Hike 100 Miles to Commemorate 100 Years

Come join us in celebrating 100 years of growth and adventure on the Allegheny National Forest by hiking 100 miles. The Centennial Hiking Challenge will take you to over 100 miles of the best and most beautiful trails we offer. Whether you want to take a peaceful nature walk on a flat, established trail, or trek through a virtually untouched wilderness area far from the noise and congestion of town, these trails all have something unique to offer.

Log the date, trail name and miles hiked. When you complete 100 miles bring your hiking log to the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau or any of the ANF Ranger offices to receive commemorative items, while supplies last. The hiking challenge ends on September 24, 2024.

ANF Centennial GeoTrail
28 ANF Centennial Geocaches will be placed throughout the Allegheny National Forest. (McKean, Warren, Elk, & Forest Counties) Find at least 20 cashes and write down the code word to receive and ANF Centennial Souvenir Token. Passports are free and can be obtained at any ANF office locations or by downloading & printing your own. Tracking available by geocaching.com

Winter Lumber Camp
Outdoor fun in the snow with sledding, snowmen, and snow art activities. Try your hand at cross-country skis and snowshoes with the help of equipment provided by PA DCNR and volunteer instructors. Lite food and beverage options available for sale inside museum.

The Bald Eagle
Rick Rupprecht will be presenting this interactive, Powerpoint-based presentation with many pictures and videos that address the physical characteristics, life style, and habitat of the Bald Eagle. A significant portion of the talk is dedicated to the history and caring for Liberty (female Bald Eagle) who lived at the Audubon Community Nature Center in Jamestown NY from 2002 to 2022. There will be plenty of time during and after the talk for audience questions.

2024 Eagle Watch
15th Annual Bald Eagle Watch will take place near the Kinzua Dam at the Big Bend Visitors Center and a wildlife viewing platform a half-mile to the south. Enjoy two birding presentations, one by Local Wildlife Photographer Rocky Holland, and the second by Master Bird Bander Don Watts and Research Wildlife Biologist Dr. Scott Stoleson. 

Winter appropriate snacks will be provided. The event is free and open to the public.

Project Learning Tree Educator Workshop
Project Learning Tree is a forest themed environmental education curriculum for K through 8th grades. Used by both formal and non-formal educators, activities align to state & national standards and include subjects such as math, science, history, and art. Participants will receive the K-8 Activity Guide and 6 hours of Act 48.

Preregistration is required! Preregister by calling the park office at (814) 778-5467 extension 106. The cost of the workshop is $10, payable in advance.
