Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, the ensemble was meant to inspire children-especially those from Harlem- to discover dance and the allied arts. Now these dancers inspire us all. The ensemble's repertoire is wide and deep-from the jaunty "Joplin Dances" through the more contemporary "New Bach" and even dances set to music by James Brown.
