New Wine, Kinzua Journey, Unveiled for National Tourism Week to Benefit ANFVB

Allegheny National Forest Visitors BureauBRADFORD, PA – May 10, 2012 – Tourism in McKean County uncorks many possibilities for business here so it only seems fitting that a new wine was unveiled Tuesday night during Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau’s Spring Fling to celebrate National Tourism Week.

Kinzua Journey, a new wine developed by Flickerwood Wine Cellars & Lounge in Kane, is now for sale with part of the proceeds to be donated to the ANFVB to help support tourism in McKean County. Tourism is the second largest industry in Pennsylvania.

Flickerwood Wine Cellars - Kane, PAFlickerwood co-owner Sue Zampogna said the tribute to the new Sky Walk is as much a celebration of the rebirth of this amazing attraction as it is a resurgence of their business from tourists.

“When the Sky Walk opened last September, we were amazed at the business we had at the winery from folks who had gone to the Sky Walk,” she said. “After nine years of little to no business from tourists going to the Kinzua Bridge State Park, we had kind of forgotten how such an amazing attraction would mean to local businesses.”

The opening of the Sky Walk has increased overnight stays in the area by more than 20 percent, bringing business to McKean County businesses.

Flickerwood’s customer base grows each year through tourists.

Country singer Kaitlyn Hallock, 15, of Bradford, PA, performed at Flickerwood for the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau’s Spring Fling to celebrate National Tourism Week.

“Tourists are our largest block of customers. When a ‘tourist’ stops at the winery because he enjoys wine, it is our job to turn that tourist into a ‘customer’ who will come back, order wine online, tell their friends about us.”

Many tourists find out about Flickerwood and other businesses in McKean County and the surrounding area through the efforts of the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau, led by Executive Director Linda Devlin.

“Being a member of the ANFVB since we opened in 2000 has been very beneficial to the growth of our business,” Zampogna said. “This organization works tirelessly promoting their members and our region. The benefits members receive far outweigh the minimal membership fee. This is one way for us to give a little back for all the help, guidance, and promotion they have given us over the years.”
Devlin said that the work the ANFVB does it out of love for the region.

“Our job is really a great one – to promote a region we love, to talk to visitors who want to come and see what great attractions we have,” Devlin said. “When you look at it, it’s not really a job, but a passion.”

Then, when Zampogna found out that funding for tourism marketing was drastically cut, she decided to help out there, too.

“Devlin discussed the situation with us and together we decided to craft a new wine to celebrate the Sky Walk and to donate proceeds from the sale of the wine to the ANFVB,” Zampogna said. “Linda, staff, and the board work tirelessly promoting our region and this is our attempt to help this organization stay in business.”

Devlin said that in McKean County alone, 758 jobs are directly supported by tourism, which generates $176 million dollars annually into our local economy.

“When Flickerwood decided to develop this new wine and donate some of the proceeds to the ANFVB, I was very excited,” Devlin said. “Tourism is so important to our area and it is partners like these that make our jobs wonderful.”

Devlin added there are many other exciting things happening in the region, including the expansion of the Penn Brad Oil Museum, the renovation of the store at the Zippo/Case Museum, the Lodge at Glendorn receiving its outfitting permit from the Allegheny National Forest, to name a few. There are also start-up businesses like B’s Canoeing Guide Service.

“The combination of all this, as well as the improvements at the Kinzua Bridge State Park, has increased the number of tourists that visit our region.”

“Our goal is to make this region the premier outdoor tourism destination for the East Coast of the United States,” Devlin said, adding that this is very much an attainable goal with 15 million people residing within a six-hour drive of the ANF Region.

A new outreach effort the ANFVB started this year is an e-newsletter that is sent to travelers interested in coming here. The newsletter features upcoming events and attractions. To receive the newsletter, go to the ANFVB website at visitANF.com.

The Kinzua Sky Walk has been just one of the attractions featured in the past few months of the newsletter.

Zampogna’s daughter, Julie Zampogna-Wehner, who came up with the label idea and design, felt the name of the wine, Kinzua Journey, should be reflected in the label, which depicts the many phases of life of the bridge.”

Winemaker Ron Zampogna, Sue Zampogna’s partner in life and in the business, came up with the blend for Kinzua Journey. It will be available to the public during FlickerFest.

“Because we wanted to release it at FlickerFest 2012, May 26, 27 and 28, the wine was started from the 2011 harvest. Mother Nature has been working its magic along with our winemakers ever since. It is just now ready in time for our anniversary weekend.”

The first vintage, which is priced at $14.95 per bottle, is in limited supply.

“When a new wine is crafted, especially a blend, we begin with a limited amount to see how popular it will be. If Kinzua Journey is a success, as we are sure it will be, we will be making it again from the 2012 harvest and will continue to make it and donate proceeds from the sales to the ANFVB,” Zampogna said.

Zampogna described the wine as a blend of three different white grapes. This unique blend brings out a smooth tropical flavor with a hint of grapefruit. It is a semi-sweet wine with a crisp ending and a wonderful fruity bouquet.

The wine is only available through Flickerwood Wine Cellars at 309 Flickerwood Road, Kane.

Lodge at Glendorn Acquires Outfitters Permit from ANF; Land in Warren County

Allegheny National Forest Visitors BureauBRADFORD, PA – April 25, 2012 – Guests at the Lodge at Glendorn now have more than a half a million acres of land to enjoy after the Relais & Chateaux attained a new outfitters permit and land in a nearby county.

The Lodge at Glendorn - Bradford, PAThe outfitters permit from the Allegheny National Forest allows the employees of Glendorn to do all of the activities they do on property on the ANF, the only national forest in Pennsylvania.

“The Allegheny National Forest adjoins our property,” said Glendorn manager David Okerlund. “This is going to allow us to utilize that land – 517,000 acres – for our guests to enjoy.”

In fact, there is access to the ANF right from the Glendorn property so, in essence, a guest never leaves Glendorn and can experience all the ANF has to offer with a Glendorn guide, including hunting, fishing, horseback riding, hiking and biking.

“This will certainly enhance our guests’ experience and further expand on what we currently offer,” Okerlund said.

Glendorn, an ORVIS-endorsed fly-fishing guide, also purchased 1,300 acres of property in Spring Township, Warren County.

Okerlund explained that Glendorn now owns two miles of a Class A wild trout stream that guests can enjoy.

He said fly-fishing is one of the many things that attracts visitors to Glendorn each year, whether they take a trip down the Allegheny or Clarion rivers or stay on property to fish.

“Even those new to fly-fishing can leave here knowing about the sport.”

Okerlund explained that the process to get the permit included submitting an application and attending several meetings. Okerlund credited Linda Devlin, executive director of the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau, with helping pave the way.

“This is a great opportunity for visitors at Glendorn to have,” she said. “To increase accessibility to the Allegheny National Forest is perfect for increasing recreation on the Forest.”

Okerlund said business at Glendorn is going strong as evidenced by the purchase of 1,600 acres in the last six months and that is not all Glendorn has purchased.

A new jet boat, an 18-foot 2012 Starcraft, was also just purchased so guests can enjoy fishing or scenic river tours.

“This boat enables us to run in really shallow places, places you can’t get with another boat,” said Shane Appleby, activities director at Glendorn. To put it in perspective, this boat can go 45 mph in six inches of water.

Earlier this year, Glendorn purchased two adjacent properties of more than 170 acres, which will be used for addition trout fishing and horseback riding.

Glendorn, located at 1000 Glendorn Drive, was the family retreat of the Dorn family for years until the family opened the estate up for guests in 1995. In 2009, Cliff Forrest purchased Glendorn and has since invested in restoring and improving the property.

Kinzua Bridge State Park has record fall season — ANFVB releases new Kinzua Bridge Sky Walk Zippo lighter

Allegheny National Forest Visitors BureauBRADFORD, PA – November 9, 2011 – That famous movie line “If you build it, they will come” came to fruition this fall as visitation at the Kinzua Bridge State Park saw an increase of a staggering 465 percent from four years ago.

Visitation at McKean County’s only state park in October was a record 66,353, according to Park Manager Jason Heasley.

Kinzua Bridge State Park - Mt. Jewett, PA

Visitation at the Kinzua Bridge State Park outside of Mount Jewett has been at a record high since the opening of the Kinzua Sky Walk in mid-September

“Tourism for this fall season has been a record high with the addition of the Kinzua Sky Walk,” said Linda Devlin, executive director of the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau, the destination marketing organization for McKean County. “Our local businesses are seeing a boost in business since the Sky Walk opened in September.”

Visitation the weekend the Kinzua Sky Walk opened in mid-September was an estimated 16,000.

“Our lodging reported sold-out nights; our restaurants and shops were full of tourists who traveled to see the new Kinzua Sky Walk. We had people checking in at our ANF Visitors Bureau Welcome Center in Bradford from all over the United States and Canada. We even had a family from Israel who were going to see the Kinzua Sky Walk – and this is only the beginning.”

Zippo lighter featuring the Kinzua Bridge Sky Walk - Mt. Jewett, PA

To commemorate the opening of the Kinzua Sky Walk, the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau is selling a new Zippo lighter featuring the Kinzua Bridge Sky Walk. The lighters are available at the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau’s Welcome Center in the Old Post Office, 80 E. Corydon St., Bradford.

The Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau is commemorating the “reinvention” of the historic towers of the Kinzua Viaduct as the Kinzua Bridge Sky Walk with a newly designed Zippo lighter which features a profile photograph of the structure.

“We’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Zippo Manufacturing Co., an American institution on its own, to develop a great keepsake on another great icon in our region,” Devlin said.

The lighters are available at the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau’s Welcome Center located in the Old Post Office at 80 E. Corydon St., Bradford. Each lighter costs $29.95 plus tax. Lighters can be shipped for an additional $4.95 plus tax.

To order a lighter, call the ANFVB at 800-473-9370 or e-mail info@visitANF.com. Payment can be made by cash, check, Visa or Master Card. Orders can also be made on the Visitors Bureau’s website, www.visitANF.com.

The ANFVB is also working on a new book, which will be an illustrated history of the Kinzua Viaduct, that is set to be released by the Spring of 2012. The book will feature historic photos, the story of the first building of the bridge in wrought iron, the rebuilding of the bridge in steel, and the most recent restoration of the towers as the Kinzua Sky Walk. The 329-acre Kinzua Bridge State Park, located minutes from Mount Jewett, features the remnants of the 2,053-foot long viaduct that was once the longest and highest viaduct in the world. The structure was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003 and six towers were restored and restructured as the Kinzua Sky Walk in 2011.

The new Kinzua Sky Walk is sure to spark more tourism dollars into the region in the future.

Devlin conservatively estimated that if the area reaches pre-tornado visitation numbers of 160,000 annually, an estimated additional $11.5 million will be brought into the region each year through tourism dollars.

To say that is conservative is an understatement given that the park reached about a quarter of that in just one month.
